In the soft pre-dawn of my attention, I notice
I’ve spent a lot of time walking, sensing, perceiving and dancing place.
It’s a bit of an obsession of mine.
The more I walk a place, the more I get to know a place.
And when I know a place, I begin to dance the place.
This work was originally proposed as a ten day walk between Devonport and Launceston, Lutruwita.
Along the way, I proposed to make a series of dance films that developed a relationship between my body and that particular place. It was a way to feel less like a tourist, in a place I have a growing interest in. It was a way to slow down and to notice more.
And then, you know, COVID happened.
What I share with you tonight is a distillation of some thoughts and moving images that I have spoken, written or danced in the last few years. They are filmed, spoken and written about from long form relationships with some very special places.
These are fragments of my ongoing dance practice. Disjointed across time. Disparate in location. They speak of my constant enquiries and fascinations into the relationship between body, brain and place. A mentor once said to me ‘you only ever make one work in your life’, and I guess this is just the next moment in that journey.
To experience the work, text me.
