THE GALLERIES

takamuna rrala - Standing Strong

Delia Summers

‘This body of work focuses on images and diagrams relating to personal journeys and interpretations around trauma, strength, and courage.

Long journeys being taken to achieve positive outcomes. Sitting under the lutha (gum) trees, reflecting on one’s journey.

The snake, and other totems are versions of my ancestors from truwana (Cape Barren Island) guiding and providing spiritual protection. The snake being my protector and totem.

The snake is portrayed within, my ancestors watch over and protecting. Giving strength breaking down countless barriers, giving strength to this strong pakana woman.

Trauma can be a very dark place for many people; however, using my skills and strength, connecting me to country, self-care, sharing of cultural knowledges to community and staying connected to my identity by the use of the red, black, and yellow is an important part of my cultural heritage.

This exhibition projects journeys of healing, strength, and systems of overcoming barriers. Enabling me to move forward, sharing of my personal journey. Hopefully an inspiration to other women.
