CLARA MARTIN
Making art is something I have always done, something I had an aptitude for growing up. In high school I started to take it more seriously when I understood I could make a career out of being creative.
I started of in graphic design and printmaking, then in University moved into textiles and conceptual art.
Art is a compulsion and a catharsis. It is a way for me to contextualise the world around me and how I experience it. It is something that emerges as a way to understand the world.
My most impactful art moment so far was presenting an interactive art experience at a festival. Spending so much time organising and designing something that an audience will interact with, then seeing how they do that and what the outcomes are was such an insightful and moving experience.
I had my first solo show with Sawtooth and have been included in multiple group shows. Sawtooth is the space that I was able to find my footing and develop my practice in the gallery space.
Sawtooth sits perfectly at the intersection of professional gallery practice and grassroots community building. It is hybrid, versatile and flexible and is something the art world needs more of.
Biography
Clara is a textile artist, designer, and gallery professional whose work explores the nuances of violence, femininity, and the domestic space.
Her work takes many forms including weaving, embroidery, quilting, all in the aim to explore what can be said through the inherent nature textiles possesses.
The juxtaposition between the embodied nature of the material and the strong influence of violence as a concept is what she find most interesting.
